Carmen D’Amato obtained her qualification as a Staff Nurse in 1989. Throughout her career, she carried out her professional duties as a nurse in acute care across various wards at both St Luke’s Hospital and Karen Grech Hospital, including the Gynaecology ward, Medical ward, Disneyland, as well as spending several years in the night relievering pool. Subsequently, she was assigned to the ‘Special Care Baby Unit’, where she developed specialised skills in intensive care for babies and children.
Later, she took on important managerial roles as Deputy Charge Nurse and Charge Nurse in other paediatric wards, including Fairyland and Paediatric Day Care. In the public sector, she currently holds the grade of Chief Nursing Manager.
In 2014, she was given the responsibility to lead as ‘Head of Nurses and Midwives’ at the public entity Foundation for Medical Services, a position she held until 2017. From there, she continued working as Director of Nursing and Midwives at Mater Dei Hospital and Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre. In December 2024, she was appointed Director for Nursing and Midwifery Services within the Directorate for Nursing and Midwifery Services under the Ministry for Health and Active Ageing.
Throughout her career in acute care, she continued her academic training by obtaining several qualifications, including:
• Level 5 Diploma in Child Psychology (2010)
• Level 5 Diploma in Management (2012)
• Level 6 Diploma in Human Resources (2017)
• Level 6 Award in People Management and Industrial Relations for Public Officers (2019)
• Level 7 MSc in Healthcare Management and Leadership (2022)
